‘Know My India’ Programme

The National Foundation for Communal Harmony in collaboration with Siasat Daily, an Urdu Newspaper of Andhra region, organized the Know My India Programme at Hyderabad from 22-28 March 2014. The programme was an integrated effort of the Foundation to acquaint the varied and diverse culture of the country to the children, who receive financial support from the Foundation for pursuing their education.

The concept of the Know My India Programme is to bring together these children from different States and regions at one place to promote oneness, fraternity and national integration. Shri Zahid Ali Khan, Editor of Siasat Daily, a leading Urdu newspaper voluntarily offered to host the programme in Hyderabad. The Foundation invited 10 children with their escorts from Assam and Manipur States to participate in this programme. Children from Jammu & Kashmir who were expected to join the programme, were unfortunately unable to do so on account of inclement weather in the State.

Participants from Manipur & Assam arrived in Hyderabad on 21 & 22 March respectively. They were welcomed by local host Shri Zahid Ali Khan, Editor, Siasat Daily, Shri Surinder Mohan, Joint Secretary & FO and Shri Sourabh Dubey, Assistant Secretary from NFCH. An introduction and orientation session was conducted immediately after their arrival. To provide a comfortable homely atmosphere to the children, Shri Zahid Ali Khan generously offered to host them at his residence.

The programme was a unique experience for the children as they were taken to several historical, educational, entertainment, religious and cultural places in and around Hyderabad. The participants visited Golconda Fort, Salar Jung Museum, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Char Minar, Sultan-ul-Uloom (Engineering College), Hussain Sagar Lake, Ramoji Film City, Shadan Medical College, Sardar Patel National Police Academy and Zoological Park. This was an unforgettable and memorable experience for the children.

The children prepared special dishes from the area that they came from, and also learnt to prepare some Hyderabadi dishes, that they will cook on return to their homes. A drawing competition was organized amongst the children participants at the premises of Siasat Daily.

On the concluding day, the main highlight of the programme was a symbolic candle light, gathering with participants holding candles in their hands to promote the theme of unity and harmony. Shri Khan Athar, Ms. Anjali and other local artistes rendered melodious and soulful songs on national integration followed by a cultural performance by the children including folk dances and folk songs of their States. The valedictory function was graced by Shri Aziz Qureshi, Governor of Uttarakhand, Ambassador Ashok Sajjanhar, Secretary, NFCH, Shri Ismiel Raza, Retd. Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, Shri Zahid Ali Khan, Editor, Siasat Daily and other distinguished and eminent persons from the region. All participants were presented with gifts and mementos by Amb. Ashok Sajjanhar & Shri Zahid Ali Khan.

All participants departed from Hyderabad for their States on 28 March 2014 with fond and affectionate memories. That they will cherish for a long time.
